What is Fat Transfer Surgery?

Fat transfer is the process of reusing your own body fat in another part of the body for extra enhancement and contour. It is also known as autologous fat injection meaning the person's own fat is used during the procedure. People opt for fat grafting for several purposes:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Brazilian butt lift
  • Relieving joint pain
  • Lip enhancement
  • Cheek augmentation
  • Chin augmentation

The procedure involves liposuction on a different part of the body such as belly, thigh or arms. The harvested fat is then purified and reused to fill in areas elsewhere in the body where enhancement is needed. A fat transfer procedure requires minimal incisions and has a quick recovery.

Fat injection is a non-invasive procedure and your body is less likely to reject its own fat. If performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon, a fat transfer surgery can provide attractive, natural, and long-lasting results in a day. On top of that, fat grafting is a permanent solution; this results in much lower long-term cost than regular dermal fillers.

What to expect after fat transfer surgery: You can observe the restored volume almost immediately after the procedure. But about 40% to 60% of the injected fat will be resorbed (dissolved) within the first month. Hence, most surgeons will inject more fat than needed to secure a satisfactory result. Wearing loose clothing can help minimize fat resorption. The remaining fat will become a living tissue and provide a plump, youthful look for the rest of your life.

Fat Transfer Augmentation

Fat transfer is the most recent technique to augment different features on face or body. It is safer than implants and more long-lasting than dermal fillers.

Breast augmentation: breast fat injection is a breast enhancement technique with few complications but natural results. It is ideal for people with good skin elasticity and nice breast shape who aim for slightly larger breasts. Fat transfer to the breasts cannot provide a change in the breast's shape. If you desire dramatically larger breasts, breast implant surgery could be a more suitable option.

Some surgeons decide to perform fat injection in conjunction with breast implants. This helps with achieving a more rounded and satisfying shape along with breast enlargement. It can also successfully fix breast irregularities along the chest.

Buttock augmentation: Brazilian Butt Lift is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries. The technique uses the patient's own fat to provide a nice contour for the butt as well as sculpting the surrounding area. You can try having a fat transfer from the stomach to the buttocks to boost a more pleasing silhouette.

Fat injection for joint pain

Fat injection can encourage stem cells growth and provide lubrication inside the joint to relieve pain and stiffness. The suctioned and processed fat can be reused to treat bone joint conditions including injuries and osteoarthritis. In a study, a great number of patients reported satisfaction and pain-relief from the treatment.

Fat transfer vs fillers

Both fat transfer and dermal fillers can be injected in areas you wish to be plumper. While the short-term effect might seem similar, a fat transfer procedure results in a longer-lasting outcome. Additionally, there is a small chance of allergic response to dermal filler injection whereas almost no reaction to fat grafting is reported.

Fillers are cheaper per session; but since ongoing maintenance is needed, fat injection is more affordable in the long run.

On the other hand, fat transfer has a short recovery time; but dermal fillers require even less downtime with mild bruising and swelling.

Basically, different treatments are tailored to various needs. For instance, BBL is a very common procedure that is performed using fat transfer. Whereas, lip augmentation offers optimal results using dermal fillers.

Fat transfer vs implants

Fat transfer can benefit various areas in the body. Implants are useful for breasts, cheek, chin or butt augmentation. Each procedure can provide certain advantages and disadvantages. You might want to weight up each technique before selecting one.

  • Implants will provide more dramatic results but are also prone to rupture.
  • While fat injection leads to a natural outcome, implants are more visible beneath the skin.
  • Implant surgery will end in visible scars but fat injection requires making minimal incisions that are unlikely to leave noticeable scars.
  • Although modern implants are safe, autologous fat transfer is more reliable.
  • Breast augmentation surgery is more affordable than fat grafting.
  • The change in breast size after breast implant surgery is much more noticeable and reliable. But Breast augmentation with fat injection results in a less dramatic change.

Types of fat transfer procedures

Fat harvesting: Fat harvesting is the first step of the procedure. The harvested fat can be achieved in a simple liposuction procedure. One or two incisions are made in the area and the surgeon uses a narrow tube to extract the excess fat. Among all methods of liposuction, traditional lipo is considered the most effective for fat transfer. Generally, fat is grafted from the belly, arms or thighs. But in most cases, you can select the body part you want the fat to be removed from.

Fat processing: The extracted fat cannot simply be injected in another area right away. The lipoaspirate (fat that is suctioned out from the body) contains substances such as blood and a local anesthetic that can cause inflammation in the area. Therefore, an additional step is required between the two steps of grafting the fat and then transferring it to areas you need to be enhanced. Fat processing is needed to purify lipoaspirate and prepare it for injection. There are four common techniques for purifying removed fat:

  • Sedimentation
  • Filtering
  • Washing
  • Centrifugation

Although they are different procedures, all of them aim for one thing that is separating the fatty tissue from other elements. Once the fatty tissue is isolated, it can be used for fat injection.

Fat injection: The surgeon performs fat injection using a syringe. It's a quick and painless procedure and you are unlikely to need any anesthesia. Still, you might feel a little discomfort during the procedure that can be helped using sedation. Fat injection on larger areas in the body such as breast or butt is performed using the same cannula used during fat grafting. For more delicate areas like facial features, syringes are used.

Fat Transfer to face

Not all people need breast augmentation or Brazilian butt lift. Some would rather have their facial features enhanced. Compared to other facial enhancement surgeries, fat grafting is a less invasive procedure. Fat injection can be performed on the chin, cheek, lips or even forehead to provide a more enhanced and plump look. It is true that dermal fillers can provide the same result with less hassle but fat grafting is a safe and permanent procedure.

Fat grafting to the forehead

Using fat graft for forehead can offer a satisfying change to the face. It is also a popular procedure performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty. Fat transfer can fill in the deep glabellar lines or the horizontal lines on the forehead. It can also improve the person's profile by providing roundness to flat foreheads.

Fat injection for cheeks

Cheek implant surgery can provide a substantially different effect. But it requires making big incisions and can be followed by basic surgical complications. Infection or implant rupture is a possibility in this cheek enhancement technique. Whereas, fat injection is a relatively recent procedure that has eliminated the risks of implant surgeries. Cheek augmentation with fat transfer provides natural results with less downtime and no scars.

Fat transfer to lips

Dermal fillers injection is a popular lip enhancement procedure, but it needs constant maintenance and regular visits to the dermatologist. Using your own body fat to enhance your lips is a safe and permanent solution. It integrates with your own natural lip tissue with almost no chance of infection. Although some extent of the transferred fat will get reabsorbed, the remaining fat will last for a long time.

Fat transfer for breast

Fat grafting is an excellent solution for achieving slightly larger breasts with natural results. In some cases, fat grafting is performed along with breast implants to provide a more symmetric and appealing look. It can also be used in breast reconstruction procedure.

Fat grafting to hips

Fat transfer can provide a curvier silhouette. You can say goodbye to the "hip dips" while getting one step closer to the popular hourglass look.

Risks and side effects

Fat injection is not the safest cosmetic surgery ever. You should make sure you choose a fully-trained medical team to minimize risks and complications associated with the procedure. Among all fat injection procedures, the Brazilian Butt lift is most likely to end in fat embolism. Other risks include:

  • Anesthesia reaction
  • Excessive blood loss
  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Infection
  • Necrosis

Fat transfer recovery and aftercare

Fat transfer has minimal downtime. You might feel mild to moderate pain that will subside within 48 hours and can be controlled using medications. In case of severe pain, you should contact your healthcare professional. The possible swelling and bruising will also go away gradually within 72 hours.

Certain instructions will be recommended by most surgeons:

  • Take the prescribed medications including antibiotic exactly how they were instructed.
  • Quick smoking and do not take any blood-thinning medication
  • Applying cold compress can help minimize bruising and swelling on the face.
  • Wear loose clothing to reduce fat resorption
  • Depending on your procedure, it could be normal to see some drainage coming out of the incisions. On day 4, you can start cleaning the area.
