How Does Eyebrow Transplant Work?

Eyebrow transplant can bring back the lost hair that is missing due to hormonal abnormalities, over-plucking, or trauma. Similar to hair transplant, eyebrow transplant involves implanting hair grafts that were harvested from another area on the body.

eyebrow transplant is performed on a small area on the body. Yet, it has some extent of complexity to it. The angulation of each eyebrow hair follicle is different. Therefore, a skilled specialist who is both medically and aesthetically experienced should perform the surgery delicately.

Based on the reason behind your eyebrow hair loss and your expectations, you and your doctor can come up with an eyebrow shape that is both to your liking and practical. You can draw your desired eyebrow shape to make sure the doctor knows where to perform the hair transplantation.

During the procedure that is performed under local anesthesia, the healthy hair follicle is harvested from another area that has the capability of hair production. Then, the surgeon inserts the healthy follicles into the bald area through very small incisions. Your eyebrows will be red and swollen afterward but the swelling will be gone within a week. In two weeks, almost all of the implanted hair will start shedding. Eventually, about 80% to 90% of the transplanted hairs will return permanently

Eyebrow transplant FUE vs FUT

The first step of an eyebrow transplantation is harvesting hair grafts. Hair graft procedure can be done with the traditional FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method or the more recent FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique.

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation, commonly known as FUT, is the traditional technique of hair restoration that became the mainstream soon after it was introduced in 1995. During this procedure, a four-inch-wide slice is removed from the back of the head. This scalp section contains hundreds of hair follicles that the medical team will carefully dissect. They will do their best to transplant as many hair follicles as possible because not all of the hair that is transplanted into the eyebrow can survive. The area on the scalp that the section was removed from will be sewn shut but it will leave a scar that is only visible on a shaved head.
  • Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE is the more recent method for hair restoration. As opposed to FUT which involves removing a portion of the scalp, FUE method entails removing individual follicles. The technique does not require stitches nor does it leave a scar on the donor area. FUE technique is an excellent choice for donor areas other than the head. Being a less invasive method, FUE seems like a less terrifying technique. But, the success rate (grafts survival after the surgery) is lower than the FUT method. It is also more expensive than FUT since the medical team has to take more detailed measures to perform the surgery.

Where Does Eyebrow Transplant Hair come from?

During most eyebrow restoration procedures, hair is obtained from the natural hair on the scalp since it guarantees a higher success rate. But according to some surgeons, hair follicles can also be grafted from other areas such as the upper thighs, chest or nape hair.

Using the hair from the back of the neck or temple area is an effective option. Because the hair in these regions tends to be finer and similar to the natural eyebrow. However, the hair from the scalp will retain its growth pattern. That is, the replaced hair will grow to be as long as the hair on the scalp. This can be tiring in the long run since trimming the transplanted hair will be necessary every 4 to 5 days.

Are Eyebrow Transplants Permanent?

As long as you are not facing severe hair loss conditions such as alopecia and the donor hair follicles are harvested from an area that is not prone to baldness (e.g. back of the head), the newly transplanted hair is going to last for a long time.

Although eyebrow transplant is a permanent solution, about 20% of the implanted grafts might not regrow. It is extremely effective if you do your best to look after for your eyebrows especially during the first 15 months after the surgery. Some aftercare tips provided bellow might help you along the journey.

Eyebrow Transplant or Microblading

If you're frustrated with disfigured eyebrows that need penciling on a daily basis, chances are you've heard of microblading. Basically, it is a semi-permanent technique that involves tattooing tiny lines of pigment on the upper layers of the skin.

Compared to eyebrow transplant, microblading is a cheaper and less invasive procedure. But, it cannot provide the natural outcome that real hair can offer. Fine lines of pigment on your eyebrows can easily get noticed since they do not have any volume or texture. Microblading is also a temporary solution which without top-ups, can last only for a year or two. Eyebrow transplant, on the other hand, offers permanent results.

Eyebrow Transplant Aftercare Tips

Following certain dos and don'ts can help you avoid complications and secure thick and full eyebrows for the rest of your life:

  • Take the prescribed medications as instructed by your doctor.
  • Do not rub or scratch your eyebrows.
  • Do not let water run down your transplanted eyebrows (avoid swimming pools). You can gently use a clean cloth to remove the dirt.
  • Use a cold eye mask or an ice pack to reduce swelling, bruises, and mild pain that can occur.
  • Stay away from the sun to protect your sensitive eyebrows
  • Be gentle to your eyebrows when applying eyebrow gels, hair dyes or other cosmetic products; particularly, during the first month after the procedure. You should also avoid eyebrow pencils since they can be harsh to the transplanted follicles.
  • Do not pluck your eyebrows. Although you might be tempted into primping and plucking your now outlandish eyebrows, this can lead to eyebrow hair loss once again. After about two weeks after the procedure, you will be able to trim your ever-growing eyebrows with a pair of nail scissors.

Risks and side effects

Eyebrow restoration is a minimally invasive surgery with little chances of side effects or complications. Still, being informed about what the procedure might entail can help you make a sound decision. It is normal to see some degree of bleeding, swelling, and bruises. You might also experience some reactions to anesthesia like nausea.

The main complication you have to keep an eye on after the procedure is infection. Although uncommon, infection can occur after the surgery. Some warning signs of infection include:

  • Bleeding
  • Fever and/chill
  • Yellow drainage coming out of the incisions
